I know I'm WAY behind on my blog. Not even a New Year post.... nothing.... I have good reason though!
On New Year's Eve I went into the hospital with some pretty bad contractions. I kept debating whether we should go because I didn't want to get sent home. I was only 37 weeks and 1 day.
But, we decided it was best to find out so we went.
I was in OB triage for a couple hours. They told me I was definitely having real contractions, not Braxton Hicks, but that my cervix was completely closed so there was nothing they could do.
The nurse went and called my midwife and apparently told her that I didn't look like I was in that much pain so the midwife told her to just send me home and offer a sleeping pill...
What? So because I wasn't begging for pain medicine and crying that's reason enough to say I wasn't in enough pain....
(I only know this because we called the midwife the next day and she told my mom all of this)
So home I went.
Completely disappointed.
The next day the contractions were still pretty bad but not unbearable. My mom thought it would be a good idea to walk me around Walmart to try to get the contractions to do something. I was in a lot of pain just walking around but not unbearable.
Then we got in the car and were going to get gas and thats when they hit me. Holy cow they were so strong and so painful. These made me cry. We called my midwife to ask her opinion because we didnt want to end up getting sent home AGAIN from the hospital. She said if they were 5 minutes apart and lasted more than a minute to go get checked again.
Okay.
So the counting began.
4 minutes apart on the dot and not stopping.
Why hello hospital we meet again.
This time at OB triage the nurse that checked me did her job right. Apparently my cervix hadn't "dropped" as far as its supposed to when you go in to labor so she kind of had to dig to get to it. It was too posterior. She found it and I was dilated to 3. What!? Overnight I went from zero to 3?
The nurse said that more than likely the other nurse didn't look hard enough and missed it because it is really rare to go from zero, completely closed, to 3 overnight.
Okay progress.... this is good.
She leaves to call the midwife to see what she wants to do with me. Comes back about 15 minutes later and tells me that they are gonna walk me around for an hour to see if I dilate anymore.
My poor mom and I walked the halls of Mercy Gilbert for an entire hour. (The OB floor is not that big so we pretty much walked in about 10 or12 circles. SO boring and SO uncomfortable.
Go back to triage and get checked, now I'm at 4. Yes. were still progressing!
She leaves to call midwife again and comes back.
She wants to walk me another hour to see if there is anymore change.
ugh, ok. So off we went. Another hour around the hospital. NOT FUN.
So after 2 hours of walking the halls of the hospital I was still at a 4 with no change but my water was bulging...
Bummer.
Calls midwife.
Well since I'm only 37 weeks and 2 days there is nothing they can do to help it along. No pitocin, no breaking my water, nothing.
My body has to do it all on its own.
This time at least they sent me home with a shot of morphine. The idea was to get my body to relax enough that maybe my cervix would drop and things would start happening on their own.
They gave me the shot in my butt! I haven't had a shot there since I was a baby and it wasn't pleasant! Stung really bad but oh so worth it! I was feeling pretty good about 10 minutes later.
Went back to my moms since I was in no shape to care for myself.
We watched The Help. (Awesome movie by the way, totally want to buy it)
I slept so good. No contractions. No pain. No nothing.
The next day I was still feeling pretty good. Still not having any pain. Small contractions here and there but nothing major. Around noon I was getting ready to leave my moms and go back to my brothers so that my parents could have a date night when I stood up and had a gushing feeling.
Same exact feeling I had when I was pregnant with Matthew.
Didn't think to much of it. Went to the bathroom. Sat back down for 10 more minutes. Stood up again and again gushing.
I just looked at my mom and said, "I think my water is leaking."
At this point neither of us want to head back to the hospital until we know for sure thats what it is. So I called my OB and they got me in right away. Tested the fluid and sure enough my water had ruptured. The nurse said she would call ahead to the hospital and I would be a Direct Admit since we already know that baby is coming. There's no turning back now.
Now I'm starting to panic a little. This is real. Baby is coming and Berto isn't here. I called Berto and told him. He left work immediately and started driving like a mad man to get here.
I was admitted to the hospital around 2pm. They started me on Pitocin and Penicillin (I was GBS positive) We told the nurse about Berto being on his way and hoping to make it. She was such an awesome nurse. She called my midwife and told her about my husband being on his way and asked to back the Pitocin down to try and slow things a little to give him time.
We kept calling him to see where he was and everytime we were shocked to find out how much closer her was.
Around 8 he called and said he was just outside Phoenix. At this point I had gotten my epidural and was feeling pretty good. Except for the heartburn. Terrible terrible heartburn.
My midwife, Tiffany, came in and checked me and said we should be able to have this baby by 9pm.
WOW that's quick!
Finally Berto gets to the hospital at about 8:30pm. SO much relief to see him and know he isn't going to miss the birth. They turned up the Pitocin and things started to progress. I didn't dilate as fast as Tiffany thought I would. We told her we were hoping baby would get here before midnight because then my kids would be exactly 2 and 1/2 years apart to the day. She assured me that baby would be here before midnight.
Around 11 both Berto and my mom were starving and decided to go down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. Naturally they both leave, neither of them take their phones and Tiffany comes to check me and I'm at 10. We're totally ready to have a baby and everyone has left me. And the ironic part is that Berto just drove 385 miles in record time just to miss the birth for a breakfast burrito. Haha. They came back and Tiffany caught them in the hall and told them I already delivered. Funny. :)
They came in and of course I made fun of them. Let's have a baby.
I think it was a total of 4 or 5 contractions and she was here. SO fast. I started pushing around 11:30pm and she was here at 11:47pm.
She was sunny side up and Tiffany said that if she had been face down my labor would have progressed faster and Berto probably wouldn't have made it!
Welcome to the world
