We arrived in California as scheduled on Wednesday (10/05/11). I had read a couple days prior that it was supposed to rain the entire day on Wednesday but me having lived in AZ for so long figured it would pass and the sun would be shining no big deal....
I. WAS. WRONG.
Holy Cow. It rained on the freeways into Tustin, It rained all the way to the bank to get our money order for the deposit, it rained while we signed our lease, it rained while we checked out our new apartment, and the worst, it rained while we unloaded the truck!!!
Berto had some friends that were coming to help unload (since I am useless at the moment) but it took them a while to get here. So Berto, my mom, and I did the best we could. Unloading the "not so heavy items." Wow, did I feel bad for my hubby. He was so tired, soaking wet, and looked miserable. By the time his friends showed up (it only took them 15 minutes to unload) poor Berto was dripping and SO tired. He had to throw away his shoes because they were so wet and stinky!!
This by far has been the worst move simply because of the rain. EVERYTHING was wet. Luckily we were smart and wrapped ALL our furniture so nothing got ruined. Boxes were soggy and we are seriously so lucky they even made it up the stairs and into the apartment without falling apart! I will never underestimate the weather man again....
Our apartment is coming together. My mom was here until Friday and she and Berto put all the furniture together. (Although at some points it was like the blind leading the blind haha)
We realized after getting all our stuff in that this place it has NO storage. So we ventured to Ikea and bought a shelf for all my kitchen items. Good thing I went through all of it before we moved and donated a bunch because there would have been NO room for it here! I LOVE my new couch and dining table. They fit perfectly! Now its just a matter of unloading the rest of the boxes. We hung pictures last night. Really Matthew's room is all thats left and I just can't seem to find the motivation to do it. Haha... I'll get there eventually.
We LOVE it here! We've been here a total of 5 days. So far we've scoped out the nearest Walmart, Target, shopping center, food places, and Berto's job.
All I have to say is that it is WEIRD that I no longer have one stop shopping. Walmarts are almost non-existent here and if you find one there are no groceries!! So I have to shop at an actual grocery store! So different from AZ where there is a Wally world on every corner! AND the one Walmart we found is not that close but its the nicest turns out its a toll road to get to it....
I have heard of toll roads but the ones I've heard of are bridges that go over bodies of water not freeways....
We did NOT understand this when we went to Walmart.... AND THEY ONLY TAKE CASH!!! Wtf?! Who only takes cash anymore???? and who carries cash anymore????
Anyway,
We were charged going into the town, then on the way out we thought we could get off the freeway before getting charged and we failed. Another charge. Then we had to get back on the freeway BAM another charge! Oh and if you skip and don't pay the toll they snap a picture of your license plate and send you a fine of $57.50 for every violation!!!!!!
There is no option to exit before you hit these tolls. You're just screwed. So there is a website and a phone number. We called and had to pay $7.75 in toll fees just because we wanted to go to Walmart! Now there are at least 4 other toll roads I have seen just driving around the past 5 days. We know now to avoid said roads.... What a nightmare!
I have seen someone turn left too sharply and run directly into the median, back up and continue on their merry way like nothing happened. Yesterday we saw a lady coming right at us on a main road the WRONG direction. Welcome to California right?
The weather is GORGEOUS. (Although I hear now that we have left AZ is having some pretty nice weather. Figures.)
We were going to head to the beach yesterday but we decided we dressed a little too warmly and didn't want to hike around and get sweaty. So instead we went to lunch, walked around Downtown Disney, and the mall.
The only downside really of our new apartment is that we don't have a fridge.
Yes, I did just sell a fridge. Even if we would have kept it, it wouldn't have fit in the space here. The space is made for a tiny fridge. So we were going to buy one but everywhere we've looked with prices we like have end of the month delivery or charge WAY too much for delivery. So we are going to rent a fridge for a couple months so we can take our time and find one we like at a price we like. I can't wait to get it. (They deliver it tomorrow) We have been eating out every meal since we can't keep anything cold. I did dig out our tiny cooler and we have bought ice 2 nights in a row just so we can have cold drinks and so I can have some milk in the mornings but I am so ready to cook meals at home and not eat fast food. We are so sick of it and its so expensive!!!
That's pretty much the worst of it.
Berto went back to work today and it took all of 15 minutes to get there. It's AMAZING! We have lived so far from his job for so long we forgot what its like to have such a short commute. Our grand total one way is 8 miles. That's it.
I have no pictures to post because everything is still such a mess. Another thing I'll get to eventually. Right now I think I need a nap. I'm exhausted from doing nothing. haha
Til next time...
